Newman Arts and the New Orleans Hispanic Heritage Foundation in collaboration with the Louisiana Philharmonic Orchestra and the Consulate of Mexico presented NEW PERSPECTIVES, a groundbreaking intercultural arts experience that explores contemporary visual arts and music of Latin America during National Hispanic Heritage Month. NEW PERSPECTIVES was an exhibition that brings together five Hispanic Contemporary Artists working in different mediums. Artists Gustavo Duque, Belinda Flores-Shinshillas, Carmen Mariscal, Piki Mendizabal, and Cristina Molina use different mediums to express a common nostalgia for tradition, loss, family, human relations, and memories in their art. These feelings are taken with them to their place of migration with a new perspective. The Isidore Newman School Choir and musicians from the LPO performed a repertoire of music that includes compositions by Silvestre Revueltas and traditional Mexican and Tango songs under the direction of the LPO’s Music Director Carlos Miguel Prieto. NEW PERSPECTIVES was held on October 24, 2017, in Reynolds Ryan Art Gallery and the Henson Auditorium at Isidore Newman School. New Perspectives was on view through December 1, 2017. As part of the program, visual art students at Newman learned about the beauty of the Latin American culture by collaborating in the studio with visiting artists. The New Perspectives experience concluded in a second exhibition at the Ogden Museum of Southern Art and the Consulate of Mexico in New Orleans, where Newman and Breakthrough New Orleans students exhibited their inspired artwork in spring 2018.
